ISO 26262 Design Package available for the CEVA-XM4 Imaging and Vision DSP

January 4, 2016

Ceva

CEVA has recently achieved a major milestone with the release of an ISO 26262 design package for the CEVA-XM4 imaging and vision DSP.  This achievement further illustrates CEVA’s commitment and dedication to delivering IP that meets and exceeds automotive industry standards and places CEVA IP at the forefront of other major IC vendors who are delivering ISO 26262 compliant solutions.

Following processes and design guidelines is one way to deliver reliable safety systems, but CEVA has decided to integrate these practices culturally and have dedicated resources to implement processes and design guidelines in our hardware, software, and development tools.  CEVA has worked with many of the automotive industry leaders to achieve this organizational alignment and the release of this design package was started some two years ago to lay the foundation to deliver the CEVA-XM4 with our ISO 26262 design package.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems(ADAS)- Take Center Stage in Automotive

Living in Detroit, it is quite common to talk about cars and this holiday season has been no different. Never before, however, have the main topics of conversation been more about the safety technologies rather than horsepower or MPG. In fact, over the course of 2015, I spent more time than most talking about Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving than anything else. Having worked with automotive technology for over a decade, I’m the “go-to” guy for family and friends on the technology front. If you are in the industry, I’m sure you can relate.

Many people are very excited about the prospect of vehicles that not only keep us safe in the event of a crash, but actually help us to avoid the incident altogether. These conversations normally lead to dream scenarios of sleeping on the way to work in our fully autonomous vehicles!

Despite the excitement, there were also a lot of questions and concerns about the reliability and safety of such systems. I did my best to ensure them that the entire industry was working tirelessly together to ensure safe and reliable systems.

The entire value chain must work together to ensure that our designs will deliver the safety and reliability for next generation active safety systems. OEMs, tier-1 suppliers, silicon vendors, IP providers, software companies, development tools and more must fully adopt safety in their processes, product designs and safety culture within the organization.

Providing active safety systems that meet the performance demands have introduced many challenges for design engineers today.  Engineers must now design energy-efficient embedded vision systems with die size and power budget constraints, algorithms that require heavy processing capabilities, and also must conform to rigorous safety standards.

Adhering to Common Practices in the ADAS Value Chain with ISO 26262

Adaptation of the ISO 26262 standard is critical in this effort such that all stakeholders in the ADAS value chain can adhere to common practices to achieve the reliability needed for such systems.

The CEVA-XM4 imaging and vision DSP is ideally suited to vision-based ADAS systems, offering exceptional processing power and energy efficiency for system designers to implement even the most complex algorithms for ADAS. The CEVA-XM4 is optimized for vision functions including auto emergency braking (AEB), free-space detection, traffic sign recognition, pedestrian detection and other neural network based object detection and recognition applications. These automotive applications are critical for ADAS and autonomous driving systems and require ISO certification in order to ensure safe and reliable operation.

CEVA’s ISO 26262 compliant safety design package helps customers accelerate the certification of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) utilizing the CEVA-XM4 imaging and vision DSP. The CEVA-XM4 is already licensed and in design for safety-critical automotive applications and is the only licensable vision processor IP today to support ASIL B safety integrity level (in accordance with ISO 26262).
