The website TechTime revealed earlier this week that teardown experts Chipworks got their hands on the latest Samsung Gear S2 SM-R730S Smartwatch with 3G and disassembled it. To not too many peoples surprise, the main CPU inside comes from Qualcomm, a brightspot for them during turbulent times for the wireless industry leader.

What was unexpected, however, was the inclusion of an always-on voice/speech recognition chip from long-time industry stalwart, DSP Group. This marks DSPG’s first high profile win in the lucrative smart wearables space and illustrates the strength of their product offering for this highly competitive arena.
What many people are unaware of, and what was not included in the teardown is that at the heart of the DSPG HDclear chip is our very own CEVA-TeakLite-III DSP! DSPG had licensed this from us a few years back and it is our DSP that enables the extremely low power always-on capabilities and the processing power to deliver the exceptional voice intelligibility of this chip. In fact, DSPG claim that HDClear is the lowest power chip of its kind in the industry.
4.5 Billion Devices with CEVA-TeakLite
CEVA-TeakLite family of DSPs has long been the leader in audio/voice for mobile, shipping in more than 4.5 billion devices to date. Now that audio/voice is making its way into more and more devices as a means to control and activate (think of voice-controlled smart home systems, handsfree automotive systems) our CEVA-TeakLite family of DSPs are set to power billions of new devices outside of the handset space.
The Samsung Gear S2 design win is a very nice addition to our CEVA-powered products gallery, but is truly only the beginning of a new era of smart and connected CEVA -powered devices.
